Read & Publish Agreements Negotiated by CAUL

Tableau Data Rules

General rules

  • Articles are counted based on unique DOIs.
  • The dashboards use the article acceptance date for analysis, not the article approval date. When you select date filters, you will be working with article acceptance dates. This is generally defined as the date the article is accepted for publishing following peer review, but does vary for some publishers.
  • Expenditure data is sourced from ContentManager. It is protected by row level security so that the data is only visible to Tableau users that belong to that institution.
  • Current status of capped agreements always runs behind on Tableau. We will be aiming to update this weekly moving forward, but the LibGuide is always up to date.
  • Article types data is as supplied by publishers with limited clean up. In the future, we would like to map publisher article types to a controlled vocabulary.
  • Publishers do not use standard terminology for licence types. The licence type data has been cleaned. Occasionally, an article will have a government licence that does not fit in the standard CC licence classifications. As such, the total number of articles by licence type may not equal the total number of articles published under the agreement.
  • APCs avoided are calculated as follows:
    • For Springer, we use the agreed APC value in the agreement for the year in question
    • For all other publishers, we use the APC list price as reported in the publisher supplied data
    • All APC values included in the visualisations have been converted to AUD
    • We only use and supply the AUD equivalent APC value in the dashboards.
  • FoR codes:
    • We use the 2020 FoR codes.
    • We report FoR codes at the Division level, regardless of whether the FoR code assigned to a journal is a Division, Group or Field code.
    • We have used the first FoR code for each journal then elevated that code to the Division level where necessary. For example, a journal with an FoR code of 4703 Language Studies is assigned to 47 Language, communication and culture.
    • Not all journals have FoR codes so the total number of articles by FoR will never equal the total number of articles published under the agreement.

Currency conversions

2023 onwards

From 2023 onwards, CAUL uses the average currency exchange rate for the period October (of the preceding year) to January (of the current year). This is generally the period in which publisher invoices for agreements are paid.

Pre 2023

Prior to 2023, CAUL used the average currency exchange rate for the period October to December (of the preceding year).
