Read & Publish Agreements Negotiated by CAUL

American Psychological Association

The content published in APA Journals™ spans the breadth of psychology. In addition to the diversity in topics, each journal also offers unique features such as open science badges, public significance statements, and translated abstracts.

Authors affiliated with most CAUL institutions may publish open access in APA's hybrid journals at no cost to the author. To qualify, the article’s corresponding author must be affiliated with a participating institution's AU or NZ campus, the article must be accepted after January 1, 2024, and the article must be an original peer-reviewed research or review article. Articles will have the CC-BY copyright license.

Agreement details

This agreement allows authors from participating institutions to publish in most of American Psychological Association's hybrid journals without the need for any transactional open access article processing charge (APC).

This is an uncapped agreement. There is no limit on the number of articles that can be published OA under this agreement.

Article eligibility

Articles accepted from 1/1/2024 are eligible to be published open access under this agreement.

  • research article
  • review article

Author eligibility

As defined by the publisher, the eligible author is:

The corresponding author is the eligible author for this agreement, as designated when the publication was submitted.

Responsible corresponding authors must include a participating institution as one of their affiliations to benefit from this agreement. 

Authors will be identified as eligible for open access publishing by their:

  • institutional affiliation
  • email address

Responsible corresponding authors must use their institutional email address when submitting an article for publication

Responsible corresponding authors should not use personal email addresses (e.g. Hotmail, Gmail). Doing so may result in delayed approval of the article or the article may not be approved to be published open access under the terms of the agreement. 

Discount schemes

No other APC discounts are offered under this agreement.

Title list

The agreement allows for publishing in most journals. The complete title list is available online. If you wish to publish open access, please check to ensure that your desired journal is included.

Please note, the APA hosts journals that are published by the Canadian Psychological Association, Hogrefe Publishing, and the National Institute of Mental Health. We do not manage their peer review or publication process, so they are not included under this agreement.

Hybrid journals that 'flip' to OA during the course of this agreement will remain available for OA publishing for the duration of the agreement.

Author rights

Articles from authors at participating institutions may be published under the following Creative Commons licenses:

  • CC BY

Author retains all rights as per the CC licence.

The Creative Commons licenses allow reuse (some with conditions) while protecting the authors' rights of acknowledgment as authors. 

Article approvals

Article approvals are managed by CAUL via Rightslink/Copyright Clearance Centre.

Other charges

American Psychological Association does charge additional fees for page and/or colour fees. Authors should always check each journal’s submission guidelines to ensure that they will not be subject to any other fees or charges.

Open access workflow

How to submit your article for open access publishing

The following instructions for authors have been provided by the publisher. Further details are available on the publisher’s website.

Step 1: Submitting Your Manuscript Through Editorial Manager
The manuscript submission process in Editorial Manager under APA’s Read & Publish agreement is the same as the standard manuscript submission process, with two small exceptions. The corresponding author will need to pay special attention when selecting the institutional affiliation and when answering the open access question to ensure that our automated workflow flags the article correctly.

During the submission process, they will be asked to enter the name of their institution (in addition to stating it on the article’s title page). The automated workflow uses this information, so accurately reporting it is essential. As they begin to type in the institution’s name, Editorial Manager will provide a list of autocompleted suggestions to select their institution. When the institution name is not verified, a yellow warning triangle will be visible.

Authors will also be given information about our open access policies in Editorial Manager and they must click the "View Open Access Charges or Read and Publish Eligibility" button o to view their eligibility under CAUL's Read & Publish agreement with APA. If they wish to take advantage of the Read & Publish agreement, they should select “Yes” as the answer to the question on this page. 

The manuscript will then move through the traditional peer review process. After the peer review process is completed and if the manuscript is accepted, authors will receive an email from RightsLink to guide them through the process of requesting open access approval from CAUL. APA staff may reach out to ensure that they are receiving the emails and to help throughout the process. APA staff ( are also available to assist with any issues or concerns related to an open access approval request.

Step 2: Submitting Your Article Approval Request Through RightsLink

When an author clicks the “Pay charges now/Raise an invoice” button in the automated email, they will be taken to the RightsLink landing page. They can click the “Get Started” button to view the funding options, and they must select “Seek funding from [their institution]” and then click the “Next” button to continue the open access publishing process. 

On the next page, they will see the institutional discount applied. Please note that even if the charges due are zero, the remaining steps must be completed to initiate publishing activities. They should then click the “Next” button to move on to the step, where they will see the total due with the institutional discount applied and the institution’s contact information. This information is not editable by the author and is stored in the system based on their institutional affiliation. They should click “Next” to review the order and then click the check box next to “I have read and accept the terms and conditions.” After this, they will click the “Submit for approval” button, and they will be taken to the page where they will confirm their submission. They should click the “Submit request” button to send the request to CAUL for approval.

At this point, the funding request has been sent to CAUL for approval, and authors can sign out of RightsLink and feel confident that their article is on its way to being made openly available to the public!
