John Benjamins

John Benjamins Publishing Company is an independent, family-owned academic publisher with a focus on linguistics and related fields. John Benjamins publishes at present 85 hybrid journals, which are topical and highly-specialized. The Read & Publish arrangement is offered on annual basis. The Read fee is based on journal subscriptions or journal collection selected by the institution and an off-set is applied on the subscription price. The Publish fee is calculated based on the average number of articles published in the previous three years by the institution, an APC price and an Open Access factor is applied.

Agreement details

This is an uncapped agreement. There is no limit on the number of articles that can be published OA under this agreement.

Article eligibility

Article types

The following article types are eligible for open access under this agreement:

  • Research articles
  • Review articles
  • Book review

There are no exclusions.

Author eligibility

As defined by the publisher, the eligible author is:

The eligible author is the author, affiliated with the institution with a Read & Publish license, that submits a manuscript to John Benjamins journals; and who is the author responsible for communicating with the journal during the submission, peer review and publication process.

Corresponding Author is the sole author or, in the case of co-authored works, is the author who is authorised to act on behalf of all co-authors of the work.

Responsible corresponding authors must include a participating institution as one of their affiliations to benefit from this agreement.

Authors will be identified as eligible for open access publishing by their:

  • institutional affiliation

Responsible corresponding authors must use their institutional email address when submitting an article for publication

Responsible corresponding authors should not use personal email addresses (e.g. Hotmail, Gmail). Doing so may result in delayed approval of the article or the article may not be approved to be published open access under the terms of the agreement.

Discount schemes

No other APC discounts are offered under this agreement.

Title list

The agreement allows for publishing in most journals. The complete title list is available online. If you wish to publish open access, please check to ensure that your desired journal is included.

Hybrid journals that 'flip' to OA during the course of this agreement will remain available for OA publishing for the duration of the agreement.

Author rights

Articles from authors at participating institutions may be published under the following Creative Commons licenses:

  • CC BY

Some or all exclusive rights are assigned to the publisher.

The exclusive right to publish the Version of Record remains with the publisher.

Default is CC BY. If the author specifically requests a different license that can be arranged.

Further information about licenses is available on the publisher's website.

The Creative Commons licenses allow reuse (some with conditions) while protecting the authors' rights of acknowledgment as authors.

Article approvals

Article approvals are managed by the publisher via an automated check as part of the production workflow.

Other charges

John Benjamins does not charge additional fees for page and/or colour fees. Authors should always check each journal’s submission guidelines to ensure that they will not be subject to any other fees or charges.

Open access workflow

How to submit your article for open access publishing

The following instructions for authors have been provided by the publisher. Further details are available on the publisher’s website.

All journal articles that enter our production workflow — after acceptance by the journal — are automatically checked to see if the institution of the corresponding author is participating in a Read & Publish arrangement with us, and if the article was submitted to the journal after the start of that arrangement.

If so, we will automatically arrange for Open Access publication.

The author(s) will see this in the proofs of the article, where Open Access information will be added in the footer and the funding section.
