Agreement details

This agreement allows authors from participating institutions to publish in most of Sage's hybrid journals without the need for any transactional open access article processing charge (APC).

This is an uncapped agreement. There is no limit on the number of articles that can be published OA under this agreement.

Unlimited Hybrid Open Access publishing: Authors of the Institution will be offered simple, transparent and free OA publishing in the Hybrid subscription titles within the collection(s). 

Gold OA discount: SAGE Gold OA publishing is included in this agreement with a 20% discount on the list rate APCs (not to be combined with other offers or special discounts). Note – this may exclude a small number of society titles where SAGE does not have the rights to apply.

Read Access: During the term of this agreement, SAGE grants access to all content within the collection(s) published on or after 1/1/1999 and those customers who currently subscribes to the Full-Text Collections access to Year 1 Volume 1 of those specific collections.

Article eligibility

Articles accepted from 1/1/2024 are eligible to be published open access under this agreement.

The following article types are eligible for open access under this agreement:

Author eligibility

As defined by the publisher, the eligible author is:

Corresponding authors from institutions listed under 'Participating institutions' may publish immediately to open access on the publisher's platform once the article has been accepted, with no transactional APCs.

Responsible corresponding authors must include a participating institution as one of their affiliations to benefit from this agreement. 

Authors will be identified as eligible for open access publishing by their:

  • institutional affiliation

Responsible corresponding authors must use their institutional email address when submitting an article for publication

Responsible corresponding authors should not use personal email addresses (e.g. Hotmail, Gmail). Doing so may result in delayed approval of the article or the article may not be approved to be published open access under the terms of the agreement. 

During the submission of the article, the submitting author is responsible for correctly identifying the Institutional affiliation of all authors, to identify the corresponding author and to provide institutional email addresses. When entering an institutional affiliation SAGE provides the author with suggested matches during this process. The author is responsible for selecting the appropriate match.

Discount schemes

Articles not covered by this agreement may benefit from a 20% discount on eligible APCs. Please consult the title list for eligible journals.

Title list

The agreement allows for publishing in most journals. The complete title list is available online. If you wish to publish open access, please check to ensure that your desired journal is included.

Hybrid journals that 'flip' to OA during the course of this agreement will remain available for OA publishing for the duration of the agreement.

Author rights

Articles from authors at participating institutions may be published under the following Creative Commons licenses:

  • CC BY
  • CC BY-NC

Authors retain all rights as per the CC license.

Authors retain the copyright of your Sage Choice article. Sage will publish your article under a Creative Commons Attribution Non-Commercial License (CC BY-NC), which allows others to re-use the work without permission as long as the work is properly referenced and the use is non-commercial.

The Creative Commons licenses allow reuse (some with conditions) while protecting the authors' rights of acknowledgment as authors. 

Article approvals

Article approvals are managed by institutions via a custom publisher platform.

Other charges

Sage does not charge additional fees for page and/or colour fees. Authors should always check each journal’s submission guidelines to ensure that they will not be subject to any other fees or charges.

How to submit your article for open access publishing

The following instructions for authors have been provided by the publisher. Further details are available on the publisher’s website.

Each SAGE journal has its own Editorial office and its own Manuscript Submission guidelines. To submit your article, go to the list of SAGE journals, search for the one you wish to submit to, click on the Manuscript Submission guidelines tab to get details on how to submit your article. For help finding an open access journal, use the SAGE Journal Recommender – enter keywords and the title of your manuscript to search over 1,000 SAGE journals and compare those most relevant for your research. Search results can be limited to those participating in SAGE Path, a service that helps you quickly and easily find, submit, and get published with the right SAGE journal.
